OSHA REPORTS ON THE WEB (Spring 99)

You can now access the OSHA inspection files through the Maritime & Aviation Consultants (MAC) web site. For example, if you wished to search for all of the inspections made on tug boats, you would do the following: open up the MAC web site at www.mac-experts.com . Select Useful Marine Links in the left window. Scroll down the alphabetical listings in the new viewing window to OSHA. Double click on OSHA and the window will change to the OSHA top page. Scroll down and click on Library/Reading Room. Under Statistics and Inspection Data, choose SIC Search. Now, you will have to enter the SIC number for the particular occupation in the form that comes up. If you do not know the SIC number, you can locate it by clicking on SIC to the left of the form and entering the occupation to find the SIC number. If you enter tug, you will be given two SIC numbers, one for Tugboat building and one for tugboat service. The latter SIC number is 4492. Click on the back button of your browser twice to take you back to the previously displayed form. Enter the SIC number, make whatever other selections you want and click on submit.

For inspections on tugboats, I filled in only the SIC number and the search located 265 inspections. Note that the Activity Number column of the inspection list contains linked numbers. Clicking on a linked number will bring up details of that inspection.

MAC tries to provide its users with methods for locating information of value on the Internet. Another link to be found in MAC's Useful Marine Links will allow you to search the Coast Guard Commandants Decisions on Appeal (DOA). These DOAs are appeal actions from Administrative Judge decisions in license or document revocation or suspension hearings. If you have a favorite site that would be of interest to our users, send an e-mail to cptkirk@pacifier.com giving the URL (address).
