MARINE COLLISIONS (Spring 99)

Book Review

Many of us who have dealt with marine collisions or rules of the road are familiar with Griffen on Collision, a book we found invaluable. It analyzed the case law and applied it to each of the navigational situations a mariner might encounter while operating a vessel. It was published in 1949. Since then, there have been advances in technology, new navigational aids, the rules have changed, and there are many new interpretations.

Finally, the void has been filled with Marine Collisions, a book written by Professor Nicholas Healy, a man with an outstanding career as an admiralty attorney and academic, and Joseph Sweeney, professor of maritime law at Fordham University and also a renowned admiralty practitioner.

This massive work includes an extensive examination of collision law. Any attorney, maritime expert, ship's officer, or Coast Guard officer will find it essential in understanding the rules by which vessels are navigated and the courts' interpretation of them.

We recommend the book most highly. It may be obtained from most bookstores or directly from Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., PO Box 456, Centerville, Maryland 21617 for $150.
