The National Forensic Center in Lawrenceville, NJ publishes a survey of expert fees every two years. The latest survey for 1996-1997 does not have any rates specifically for maritime experts but does have rates for similar types of experts. An extract of these fees and those for Aviation are set forth below. The first figure is the low per hour fee, the second the average and the last is the high:
Accident Reconstruction (Aviation) - Trial preparation $95, $100, $125 - Testimony $95, $145, $200 - Reports $100, $160, $350
Accident reconstruction (Vehicular) -Trial preparation $60, $150, $220 - Testimony $115, $170, $225 - Reports $60, $150, $220
Naval Architecture - Trial preparation $95, $140, $175 - Testimony $185, $195, $200 - Reports $95, $140, $185
Sports & Recreation -Trial preparation $90, $230, $375 - Testimony $125, $190, $250 - Reports $90, $100, $125
The rate which an expert can charge should be based on a number of criteria. These include the amount of trial experience they have, their ability to present themselves in a favorable matter, and their credentials. One of the most important assets an expert has is their presentation. A person with the best of credentials is of little value if they can't present themselves as a creditable witness who is concise and yet able to convey their opinion well. Take these factors into consideration when setting your own rate.
