The fees experts charge vary geographically for the same discipline, and from discipline to discipline. The National Forensic Center, Lawrenceville, NJ, publishes a survey periodically, the latest published in 1992.
There was no survey done for admiralty experts. However there are schedules for fees of similar disciplines which give a good indication of what admiralty experts are charging. They are consistent with the hourly rates MEC has experienced among its Associates.
Accident Reconstruction (Aviation): Trial preparation, low $95, average $120, high $160; court and deposition testimony, low $95, average $150, $high $200.
Engineering (mechanical): trial preparation, low $90, average $135, high $188; court and deposition testimony, low $115, average $165, high $250.
Naval architecture: trial preparation, low $80, average $100, high $150; deposition and court testimony, low $100, average $100, high $150.
Safety: trial preparation, low $75, average $135, high $250; trial and deposition testimony, low $75, average $150, high $300.
These rates should be adjusted for the three years which have lapsed since the survey.
