Titanic to Exxon Valdez by Capt. Richard A. Cahill
For those with an interest in the sea, particularly those who deal with the disasters and tragedies which end up in the court room, Capt. Cahill has written an extremely good book about the modern day accidents.
The book is well researched and the author provides some frank incites into the causes. Starting with the TITANIC, he continues with a searing criticism of the design of the RO-RO class of vessels reviewing casualties of the PRINCESS VICTORIA (1953), ZENOBIA (1980), EUROPEAN GATEWAY (1980), the HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE (1987).
The book then continues with a review and analysis of such notorious cases as the FLYING ENTERPRISE, PAMIR, MORRO CASTLE, LAKONIA, BETELGUESE, ANDREA DORIA/STOCKHOLM, TORRY CANYON and finally the EXXON VALDEZ.
The book reads like a novel and is hard to put down once you have started, but Captain Cahills analyses are important lessons for all those who sail or deal with maritime issues.
It is absorbing reading and food for thought.
