A book review
The Fishing Vessel Owner's Association has just published a new paper backed manual, Long Line & Purse Seine Safety Handbook which contains a wealth of information for vessel owners and operators. Of particular note are recommendations on the safeguards necessary in this litigious society to prevent claims for injuries which occurred before or after employment on fishing vessels.
It is not unheard of to receive a claim for an injury that the boat owner never knew occurred, and that in fact may not have occurred aboard his fishing boat.
Aside from this, the 88 page handbook contains chapters on Pre-Season Checklist, Crew Preparation, Operations, Cargo Handling, Survey, Stability, Watertight Integrity, Alarms, Fire and more. It will help the conscientious fisherman reduce vessel and crew casualties and is well worth the $15.95 (plus the inevitable $1.50 handling charge). It may be purchased from FVOA/MSR, Suite 232, West Wall Building, Fishermens' Terminal, Seattle, WA 98119. Our congratulations to John Sabella and Associates for a well thought out and worthwhile handbook.
