If you are a corporate manager or an attorney looking for an expert to help you with the design of a terminal or with litigation, how much time do you spend locating the right expert? First, you look through your files and perhaps ask you peers in the office if they know of someone. Then you call a friend or contemporary to see if he has a recommendation.
What is your time worth? Probably anywhere up to $170 per hour. Are you an expert in locating experts? Most people who have been in the business think they are, but they don't spend a significant portion of their time doing it.
The best source of experts in maritime disciplines including environmental issues associated with the sea, is Maritime & Environmental Consultants. Captain Greiner, who is a licensed attorney, is in his sixth year of operating MEC. He is a retired Coast Guard marine specialist, and also does consulting and expert testimony work himself.
For the small fee of $50, he will recommend one of MEC's 1000 Associates or if he is not satisfied that one of them has the proper background, he will attempt to locate the expert from one of the many sources he has at his fingertips.
The usual procedure is for Captain Greiner to interview several people he thinks are qualified from his extensive database, and then to recommend one to the client. If upon requalification by the client, the recommended expert is not deemed qualified, the $50 fee is waived.
