Whether you are reconstructing a casualty or going sailing, the new software from Nautical Software contains much vital information on tides, current and other astronomical data. The software runs under windows and requires 2 MB of ram, 3 MB of hard disk space, a 386 or higher processor running MS-DOS 5.0 or later and Windows 3.1 or later.
Tides can be shown as a graph or a table (minute by minute if you want). Current is shown for those areas where NOAA has data in graph form. You can place the cursor on the graph and get a numerical reading. Sun and moon rise and set are calculated. The only thing missing which would not be of use to all people is the azimuth and altitude of the sun and moon.
The presentation is in windows, and multiple windows showing different locations can be open at the same time. It can also be run as a real time window while working other programs. Printing of the graphs and data is through the windows designated printer. In fact, if you have a color printer, minus tides are shown as red on the graphs and plus tides are blue. The times are adjusted to the local time including day light time.
In fact, it contains NOAA's notes if available on conditions or dangers at particular locations. Finally, you do not have to update the data annually. The program uses NOAA's calculations and will give valid data indefinitely.
The version we reviewed will be updated in November although it hard to identify what can be done to improve it. You can order directly from Nautical Software, 14657 SW Teal Blvd, Ste 132, Beaverton, OR 97007, (503) 579-1414 - Fax (503) 579-1304. The current price for a single coast version is $129. If you want it for both coasts, it is $179.
We can't be more enthusiastic about this program.
