By Kirk Greiner
As a licensed attorney, I attend many hours of Continuing Legal Education each year. I recently attended a CLE seminar in Seattle, Washington, WINNING WITH EXPERTS . It was very interesting to sit in the audience and listen to the opinions of attorneys on how to use expert, what they can and cant do, and when and where to get them. One of the presenters, an expert on human factors, was an Associate of MEC.
What surprised me was the comments from two of the speakers, both attorneys, who, while addressing the issue of how to locate an expert, said they would not normally use a referral agency.
In attempting to rationalize their comments, I thought of how the normal referral agency handled requests for experts.
The procedure I am aware of utilizes a clerk and a computer. If you want an expert on widgets, the person answering the phone, who is neither an expert nor an attorney, enters a computer database and searches under "widgets" and furnishes the caller with the name of the nearest person who shows up on the screen.
Neither of the seminar speakers was aware of MEC since they werent maritime attorneys or on our mailing list MEC does not operate that way. The procedure at MEC is for Captain Greiner, the owner, to personally handle requests. He is not only an attorney but has an extensive consulting practice himself. After locating the person or persons who he thinks are most suitable, he talks directly with them before making a recommendation to the person seeking an expert. It is this difference which sets MEC apart from the competition that and the fact that we have 1300 experts in maritime related fields. No other referral company has the maritime resources to help you which we do.
