The National Transportation Board reported in July that marine fatalities were down in 1989 compared to 1988. Commercial marine fatalities dropped from 128 to 95 and recreational marine fatalities dropped from 946 to 896.
In transportation related fatalities, highway fatalities lead with 45,454, followed by 1158 in aviation, 991 in marine, 791 in grade crossings, 601 in rail and 39 in pipeline.
